What is an AI visibility checker?
An AI visibility checker shows whether AI engines recommend your brand when people ask about your category, and how you stack up against competitors. CitedSpy finds your top competitors, picks the real prompts where you should appear, then queries ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok live. You get a 0-100 visibility score, a competitor share-of-voice breakdown, a prompt-by-prompt rank heatmap, sentiment, and the sources engines cite.
AI visibility is how often, and how favourably, AI engines surface your brand in their answers. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for the best option in your category, the engine names a handful of brands and cites a handful of sources. If yours is not among them - but your competitors are - you are invisible to a fast-growing slice of buyers who never see a list of blue links.
An AI visibility checker measures that presence in context. Instead of guessing, CitedSpy first works out what you actually do (reading your website when your brand is niche or local), finds the competitors engines are likely to recommend instead of you, and chooses the real questions buyers ask where you should rank near the top. It then sends those prompts to five engines at once and reads every answer for who gets named, in what order, and how.
The result is a full competitive picture, not a single number: your share of voice against named rivals, where you rank prompt by prompt, which engines see you, the tone they use, and the sources they cite. This is the core idea behind Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): traditional SEO earns you a ranked link, GEO earns you inclusion inside the AI answer itself. You cannot improve what you cannot see, so measuring against your competitive set is step one.
Run your check in four steps
Enter your brand name
Type your brand as customers say it. We work out what you do - even for a small or local business - so the report is grounded in your real category, not a guess from the name.
Add your domain (recommended)
With your domain we read your actual homepage, which is what makes niche and local brands work. It also lets us tell when an engine cites your own site, not just names you.
We find your competitors and prompts
CitedSpy pulls the ~5 competitors AI engines recommend in your space and the real buyer questions where you should land in the top 3-4 - then runs each prompt across every engine, live.

Get a 0-100 visibility score, competitor share of voice, a prompt-by-prompt rank heatmap, per-engine visibility, sentiment, and the sources engines cite - with the right favicon for every brand.
How to read your report
Start with the headline: the 0-100 score reflects how often engines surface you, how highly they rank you when they do, and how positively they describe you - all measured across the prompts where you genuinely should appear. Below it, share of voice shows what slice of the conversation you own versus each named competitor, and the leaderboard ranks every brand by how often engines recommend it. If rivals fill the top rows and you sit near the bottom, that gap is your opportunity.
Then read the prompt-by-prompt heatmap. Each cell is your rank in one engine's answer to one prompt, so you can see exactly where you place top 3-4 and where you vanish. It is common to be strong on Perplexity (live web search) yet absent on an engine working from older training data, or to win one prompt and lose another in the same category. Those specific gaps - this prompt, that engine - are where GEO work pays off.
What to remember
- AI visibility is whether AI engines recommend your brand - and rank it above competitors - when buyers ask about your category.
- Context beats a bare check: CitedSpy reads your site, finds your real competitors, and tests prompts where you should appear, so the score means something.
- Share of voice and a prompt-by-prompt rank heatmap show not just if you appear, but where competitors crowd you out.
- Visibility varies sharply by engine, so a single-engine check is misleading - measure across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok together.
- Being mentioned and being cited differ: a strong result has engines citing your own domain, not only naming you. Measurement is step one of GEO.
Our methodology
A check runs in two phases. First, CitedSpy works out who you are: when you provide a domain we fetch and read your homepage directly, then use that plus live web search to identify your category, the roughly five competitors engines tend to recommend in your space, and a set of natural buyer questions where you should rank near the top. Reading your own site is what makes the tool work for niche and local brands the model has never heard of.
Second, it sends every one of those prompts to each available engine - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Grok - using their live web-search tools where supported. We read each answer for your brand and every competitor, record who is named and in what order (a proxy for rank), classify sentiment, and collect the domains each engine cites. From all of that we compute your visibility score, share of voice, per-engine and per-prompt rank, and top sources.
The score rewards genuinely showing up and ranking high over a bare name-drop, and it only counts engines we actually reached - a slow engine is reported as not reached rather than guessed. Results are cached for 24 hours so repeat checks are instant. This is the same measurement engine that powers CitedSpy's paid tracking; the free tool runs it once, the product runs it continuously and tracks how it moves.
