What is a GEO checker?

How to read your GEO grade
Start with the letter grade and score. An A (80-100) means the page is well-optimized for generative engine citation - it leads with a direct answer, cites real sources, uses clear structure, names its author, and carries schema markup. A B (60-79) is a solid foundation with one or two gaps that a targeted fix would close. A C (40-59) means the page is indexed and readable but missing several of the signals AI engines use to select content for citations. A D or F (below 40) means the page is unlikely to be cited in AI answers for its target keyword regardless of its Google rank - the content structure is fundamentally misaligned with how AI engines extract and quote information.
Then read the criterion breakdown. Each of the five criteria is scored 0-20. A pass (12+) means the criterion is meaningfully satisfied; below 12 means it needs work. The criteria are not equally urgent: Answer Capsule and Statistics and Sources are the two highest-leverage signals from the GEO research - a page that fails both will rarely be quoted by an AI engine even if the other three criteria are perfect. The GEO Checker runs in two steps. First, it fetches your live page using a CitedSpy crawler, strips navigation, ads, scripts, and boilerplate, and extracts the body text, headings, title, meta description, and whether structured data and canonical tags are present. The extracted text is capped at 5,000 characters - enough to cover the above-the-fold content and the first several sections, which is where the GEO-critical signals are concentrated.
Second, it passes the extracted content to Gemini (Google's AI model) with a structured scoring rubric based on the GEO research literature - primarily the Princeton / Georgia Tech GEO study (Aggarwal et al., ACM KDD 2024) and the practical signal hierarchy established in that work. Gemini grades each of the five criteria 0-20 and returns a one-sentence justification for each score, a summary verdict, and a ranked list of quick wins derived from the lowest-scoring criteria. The total is the sum of the five scores.
