What is an AEO checker?
An AEO checker grades a web page on how well it is structured to win featured snippets, Google AI Overviews, voice search answers, and zero-click results. Enter a URL and the checker fetches the live page, evaluates it on five answer engine optimization criteria - direct answer block, Q&A content structure, featured snippet triggers, answer schema markup, and conciseness - and returns a 0-100 score with an A-F grade and a prioritised list of quick wins.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search and AI engines can extract a direct answer without the user clicking through. Google's featured snippets, AI Overviews, People Also Ask boxes, and voice search results all work by pulling a short, quotable block from the page that most cleanly answers the query. An AEO checker applies the structural criteria for that selection process to a real URL and returns an objective grade.
Those criteria are different from GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). GEO focuses on getting cited inside ChatGPT or Perplexity answers - earning a mention or a source link in a conversational response. AEO focuses on being the zero-click answer itself: the paragraph Google shows above organic results, the snippet a voice assistant reads aloud, or the AI Overview block that sits above the search page. The structural requirements differ: AEO rewards concise extractable units (40-60 word paragraphs, clean numbered lists, definition blocks, FAQ schema) while GEO rewards cited statistics, authoritative authorship, and quotable assertions.
Five criteria drive the AEO grade. The Direct Answer Block is the most important: a clear, self-contained 1-2 sentence answer to the target query within the first 150 words of the page. Q&A Content Structure rewards question-formatted headings and organized question/answer pairs. Featured Snippet Triggers look for the specific paragraph, list, table, or definition-block formats that earn position zero. Answer Schema Markup checks for FAQPage, HowTo, or Speakable JSON-LD that lets answer engines parse the page programmatically. Conciseness checks that individual answer units are short enough to extract cleanly. Each criterion scores 0-20 for a 0-100 total.
Grade your page in four steps
Enter your page URL
Paste the full URL of any publicly accessible page - a blog post, product page, FAQ article, or help-centre article. The checker fetches the live version, so what it grades is what answer engines actually see when they crawl today.
Add a target keyword (optional)
If you have a specific query you want to win the featured snippet or AI Overview for, add it. The checker uses it to judge how directly the page answers that question. Leave it blank and the checker infers the target from the page title and opening content.
We fetch and grade the page
The checker fetches your live page, extracts headings, body text, and schema markup, and grades it against five AEO criteria: Direct Answer Block, Q&A Content Structure, Featured Snippet Triggers, Answer Schema Markup, and Conciseness. Each criterion is scored 0-20.
Read your AEO grade and quick wins
You get an A-F grade, a score breakdown for each criterion, a one-sentence verdict, and a ranked list of quick wins - the specific edits most likely to earn you a featured snippet, AI Overview placement, or voice search answer.
How to read your AEO grade
Start with the letter grade and score. An A (80-100) means the page is well-structured for answer engine extraction - it opens with a clean direct answer, uses question-style headings with organized Q&A pairs, contains the right format for a featured snippet, carries answer schema, and keeps individual answer units concise. A B (60-79) has most of those signals but is missing one or two. A C (40-59) is readable but is unlikely to win a featured snippet without structural changes. A D or F (below 40) means the page is formatted in a way that makes answer extraction difficult.
Read the criterion breakdown for the specific fix. Each criterion is scored 0-20: 12 or above is a pass, below 12 needs work. The Direct Answer Block is the highest-leverage criterion - a page without a clean opening answer is rarely chosen for any zero-click format, even if the other four criteria are perfect. If that criterion is low, rewrite the first 1-2 sentences of the main section as a direct, jargon-free answer to the target query. The quick wins list translates the lowest-scoring criteria into specific, actionable edits.
What to remember
- An AEO checker grades a page on five criteria that determine whether answer engines - Google featured snippets, AI Overviews, and voice search - will extract and surface it as a direct answer.
- AEO and GEO are different disciplines: AEO targets zero-click featured snippets and voice answers; GEO targets citations inside ChatGPT or Perplexity conversations.
- The Direct Answer Block is the highest-leverage AEO criterion - a clear 1-2 sentence answer within the first 150 words is the minimum requirement for featured snippet eligibility.
- Answer paragraphs in the 40-60 word range match the format Google most consistently extracts for featured snippets and AI Overview answers.
- FAQPage and HowTo JSON-LD schema let answer engines parse question/answer pairs directly from the markup - without depending on position or inference.
Our methodology
The AEO Checker runs in two steps. First, it fetches your live page using a CitedSpy crawler, respects robots.txt, strips navigation, scripts, and boilerplate, and extracts body text, headings (H2-H4), title, meta description, and whether JSON-LD schema and a canonical tag are present. The extracted text is capped at 5,000 characters - enough to cover the opening sections where the AEO-critical signals are concentrated.
Second, it passes the extracted content to Gemini with a structured scoring rubric based on the AEO research literature - the criteria that determine featured snippet and AI Overview selection: concise direct answer blocks, question-format headings with Q&A organization, the 40-60 word paragraph and list formats that Google most consistently elevates, FAQPage and HowTo JSON-LD, and individual answer-unit conciseness. Gemini grades each of the five criteria 0-20 and returns a one-sentence justification for each score, plus a ranked list of quick wins derived from the lowest-scoring criteria.
The grade is not a ranking prediction - it measures how well the page is structured for answer extraction, not whether it will be selected. Selection also depends on domain authority, topical relevance, and competitive context. What the AEO Checker gives you is the controllable half: the on-page structure that the research shows answer engines consistently reward. CitedSpy's paid product then tracks whether your brand is actually appearing in AI answers - closing the loop from page optimization to brand-level visibility.
